What is Nipple Augmentation?

Nipple Augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that can correct misshapen nipples.It is especially associated with the condition of inverted nipples.  Nipple Augmentation surgery can be separated into two categories: Nipple Correction and Nipple Reconstruction.

Nipple Reconstruction is intended for women who have had a mastectomy or lumpectomy.  This type of nipple surgery is usually performed in conjunction with breast reconstruction surgery.  In this case, the nipple is not augmented, but created from a flap of skin.

Nipple correction is performed  to correct a condition known as inverted nipple. This is the most common form of nipple augmentation performed by plastic surgeons.  The condition of inverted nipples causes the nipples to point inward instead of outward, which can cause embarrassment due to their appearance. Inverted nipples can also interfere with breast-feeding. The procedure can also be pursued to correct puffy, oversized nipples. In this case, the surgeon will remove and alter the nipple tissue, creating a more normal, healthy looking nipple.
